Who this is for
This is for people stewarding match days and events: football and rugby grounds, arenas, concerts, parades and carnivals. It is the entry qualification for the role, and it is the one most venues will ask you about first.
There are no formal entry requirements. You need to be 16 or over, and you need to be able to read and write well enough to keep a log and complete a report.
Because the qualification is about what you can do rather than what you can recall, you need access to real events to gather the evidence. A work placement runs throughout the qualification, before certification.
What the qualification covers
Four things you have to be able to do, and show that you can do, before a certificate is issued.
-
Getting ready for an event
Your briefing, your position, the venue, and the equipment you are going to rely on.
-
Moving people safely
Entry and exit, gangways and sightlines, and keeping the routes out of a stand clear.
-
Dealing with people
Looking after spectators, spotting trouble early, and taking the heat out of it before it becomes an incident.
-
When something goes wrong
Incidents, emergencies, evacuation, and the report that has to follow.
How the assessment works
Assessment is through what you actually do at work. Your assessor watches you steward, asks you about the decisions you made, and gathers the evidence with you. That evidence is built into a portfolio.
The portfolio is internally assessed and then externally quality assured. There is no written exam.
Simulation is used only where a real work environment cannot produce the evidence.
Also required before certification.
The ACT eLearning counter-terrorism training, which is free from GOV.UK, and a recognised first aid award.
Where it leads
Achieve this and you can move on to the Level 3 Certificate in Spectator Safety Supervision, the supervisory qualification for the same industry.
