Stewards stepping up to supervise

This is for stewards moving up into a supervisory role, and for people already running a team who need a qualification that says so. Same industry as Level 2, at sports grounds, arenas, concerts, parades and carnivals, but from the other side of the briefing.

There are no formal entry requirements. You need to be 18 or over, and a Level 2 qualification in spectator safety is useful preparation rather than a condition.

As at Level 2, a work placement runs throughout the qualification and before certification, because the evidence has to come from real events.

It supports roles such as senior steward, supervisor and assistant ground safety officer.

What the qualification covers

Four things you have to be able to do, and show that you can do, before a certificate is issued.

  1. Getting the team ready

Briefing your stewards, checking the areas you are responsible for, and checking the equipment in them.

  2. Running your area on the day

Deploying people where they are needed, holding the standard, and stepping in when it slips.

  3. Information and decisions

What you are told, what you pass on, what you act on, and what you record.

  4. Working with everyone else

The control room, the safety officer, contractors and the emergency services.

How the assessment works

Assessment is through what you actually do at work. Your assessor watches you supervise, asks you about the decisions you made, and gathers the evidence with you. That evidence is built into a portfolio.

The portfolio is internally assessed and then externally quality assured. There is no written exam.

Simulation is used only where a real work environment cannot produce the evidence.

Also required before certification.
